This lecture course is designed to provide students with a survey of the history of the American South from colonial times to the beginning of the Civil War. A distinct regional and cultural entity, increasingly dominated by the institution of black slavery and the plantation system, the South played a crucial role in antebellum US history. The twofold aim of this course is to highlight the distinctive features of southern historical development before the Civil War as well as to discuss how the South interacted with the rest of the nation.
