The new media has changed the ways by which we receive information about the world and made everyone a potential newscaster, but it has also made us cautious about how we select and interpret our news sources. The mini lecture will use the media representation of the ongoing war in Ukraine as an illustration of the choices we need to make in order to select credible sources, identify relevant information, and recognize forms of manipulation, such as political propaganda or psychological operations.

The mini class aims to discuss some of the changes that took place in the representational strategies of Disney, Pixar as well as Disney/Pixar animated films. It will be a brief overview of how the Company/Companies chose/choose topics and how they rework/ed original folk and/or fairy tales and what new stories they create that do not have origins within the realm of folk and fairy tales. We will see how these animated films try to help us navigate the current issues as well as reflect on the past such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), Cinderella (1950), Sleeping Beauty (1959), The Little Mermaid (1989), Beauty and the Beast (1991), Pocahontas (1995), Mulan (1998), Bolt (2008), WALL·E (2008), Tangled (2010), Brave (2012), Frozen (2013), Moana (2016), Zootopia (2016), Encanto (2021) and Raya and the Last Dragon (2021).
