The semiquincentennial anniversary of the birth of the USA in 2026 occasions an act of remembrance of the vision that the contemporary American people shared about independence. President Trump has recently noted that ”The story of America makes everyone free.” referring to the supposed impact of official celebrations on today’s Americans. But what did freedom mean to the people of the American Revolution? What made them decide to break ties with the mother country, and how did they justify that? What did independence and the struggle for it mean to different social groups living in the thirteen North-American colonies of Britain? These are the questions that I will be addressing in this mini class offered by the Department of American Studies, University of Szeged.

In this minilecture I will demonstrate the quixotic alignment of media fandom’s written manifestation (i.e., fanfictions) with Walter J. Ong’s notion of “secondary orality.”

The new media has changed the ways in which we receive information about the world and it has made everyone a potential newscaster, but it has also made us cautious about how we select and interpret our news sources. The mini lecture will use the media representation of the ongoing war in Ukraine as an illustration of the choices we need to make in order to select credible sources, identify relevant information, and recognize forms of manipulation, such as political propaganda or psychological operations.
