Description of the programme:

The main objective of this Doctoral School http://160.114.35.186/phd/ is to train researchers of Educational Sciences. Its curriculum focuses on formal education, learning and instruction, in the paradigms of empirically based social sciences. Students are prepared for engaging in a wide spectrum of research activities using a plethora of research methods, and for studying the psychological, social and economic contexts of schooling and learning.

Graduates often choose their careers in higher education, research institutes, government agencies, non-governmental organisations, regional and local educational administration, and companies in the field of education.


Research areas include Psychological Questions of Development and Education;

Learning and Instruction; Educational Assessment; Digital Technologies in Education; Social and Emotional Education; Health Education; Content Pedagogy.

Who should apply?

We expect applicants to be interested in issues related to education and schooling. It is an advantage if the applicant has a Master's degree in Education or Psychology or in a field related to learning and instruction.

Applicants should have a research topic and they must ascertain that it matches a research topic among those announced on doktori.hu (cf. http://160.114.35.186/phd/ ). It is recommended to contact the prospective supervisor announcing the chosen topic before submitting the application.


Application requirements:

To be submitted:

• Master's degree – academic records: original diplomas and diploma supplements/transcripts and certified English translations of these documents (master’s and previous)

• proof of oral and written proficiency in English (at least upper intermediate level, B2 in the Common European Framework of Reference or equivalent to IELTS 6.5). The proof of proficiency must be issued by an established, internationally recognised language examination body. – If the medium of instruction was English in a higher education programme the applicant graduated from, it is possible to provide an official declaration of this by the Registrar’s Office of the college/university that issued the diploma in lieu of the language exam.

• list of academic publications or link to publication list (if you have such publications)

• motivation letter

• CV

two letters of recommendations

• research plan: compulsory for those who apply through a Tempus Public Foundation program (e.g. Stipendium Hungaricum); optional for others

• statement of a prospective supervisor agreeing to work with candidate if admitted: optional


In person/videoconference:

• interview (in person or videoconference; covering the background of the applicant in research methodology, the chosen research field, and academic communication).



Start of the programme: September of each year
