Törzsképzés

This MA programme is designed to provide students with interpretive skills, academic research tools, and a critical perspective in the fields of English Studies. Students are introduced to basic theoretical fields such as history and theory of literature, theories of language, the social uses of language, gender studies and the multimediality of culture. An overview of academic research tools in the information society and the digital humanities is also presented during the course of studies, and students participate in interactive seminars, research practice and thesis writing consultations.

Rigorous coursework develops abilities of understanding the human subject in the linguistic, historical, ideological complexities of society. During the programme there is a focus on developing skills of academic research, critical thinking, argumentative academic writing and analytical skills. Graduates of the Faculty usually choose their careers in cultural and public administration, tourism, media and at international business companies. There is also an opportunity to continue studies in PhD programmes.

Applied Linguistics specializáció

Az angol alkalmazott nyelvészeti tanulmányok célja elméletileg megalapozott gyakorlait irányultságú kurzusokat és empirikus képzést nyújtani az empirikus alapú nyelvészet iránt érdeklődő hallgatók részére, amely lehetővé teszi, hogy a megszerzett ismereteket felhasználhassák kontextusba ágyazott nyelvhasználati elemzésekhez. Tanáraink a nyelv interdiszciplinárus szemléletével olyan kutatásokhoz járulnak hozzá, amelyek relevanciával bírnak a való világ problémáinak feltárásában. Oktatóink közül többen is az Egyesült Királyságban, Ausztráliában vagy az Egyesült Államokban szerezték meg doktori fokozatukat.

Gender Studies specializáció

Critical and interdisciplinary in approach, the specialization Gender through Literatures and Cultures in English in the Bologna English Studies MA Program was launched in September 2009. It seeks to address many of the current social, cultural and professional issues from the perspective of gender and sexuality. It is run by a multidisciplinary faculty with a profile of teaching and research that covers literary criticism, popular cultural studies, media studies, discourse analysis and lavender linguistics. Our courses explore the experiences of women and men and probe the explanatory power of concepts of gender and sexuality as developed within various feminist approaches. The programme provides students with essential knowledge of the intersection of cultural representations and social structures and political power in the US, UK and Irish contexts. We also seek knowledge of post state socialist gender and sexuality relations in Hungary, probing the limits and potentials of travelling concepts in the transnational flows of feminist knowledge production. Our students will understand how beliefs and assumptions about women and men, about sex and sexualities shape social institutions and activities and vice versa as well as how they are necessarily inflected with other dimensions of our daily existence, such as race, class or ability. They can also have the opportunity and continue their gender studies research in the two PhD programmes in the Institute of English and American Studies in the field of literature and cultural studies or in English applied linguistics. We also hope to prepare our graduates for careers and jobs offered by various government institutions of equal opportunity on local and regional level, by local and transnational civil organizations such as NANE or Amnesty International, or jobs in the media and electronic journalism, museums and art galleries that support alternative cultural performances and enterprises.

Interdisciplinary Cultural Studies specializáció

Az interdiszciplináris kultúratudomány szakirány a kritikai kultúrakutatás értelmezői eljárásait alkalmazza. A kurzusokon egyidejűleg több tudományág (pl. irodalomtudomány, művészettörténet, antropológia, pszichoanalízis, szemiotika, filozófia) meglátásaira támaszkodunk, hogy feltárjuk a társadalmi közegbe ágyazott jelhasználó ember kulturális meghatározottságait és az azokat közvetítő hagyományokat. Történelmi, esztétikai, befogadástörténeti, mediális, jelelméleti összefüggéseikben értelmezzük a társadalmi gyakorlatként felfogott kulturális reprezentációkat (az irodalmi és képzőművészeti alkotásokat, a populáris és anyagi kultúrát, a szimbolizációs hagyományokat, a társadalmi szabályrendszereket), és ezen keresztül a hallgatók olyan értelmezési és érvelési készségeket sajátítanak el, amelyekkel saját koruk társadalmi jelenségeit is kritikusan tudják szemlélni és elemezni.
