Modern age

Modern Age Doctoral Program

The Past of the Program

After the the fall of the socialist regime, the so-called regime change (1990) at the University of Szeged doctoral and habilitation procedures could be carried out just in the Doctoral School of Medieval History. Later opportunities opened up, and under the leadership of Professor László J. Nagy and Professor Ádám Anderle doctoral degree could be obtained from the topics of the history of the Western Mediterranean and the Hispanic world. The evolving Modern Age program gradually widened; under the leadership of Sándor László Tóth the 16-17. century specialization and under the leadership of László Marjanucz and with the participation of Ágnes Deák the 18-19. century research specialty started, while the research and education field of the 20th century history also appeared in the Modern Age history program. By the late 1990s the Modern Age program covered basically the huge period from the sixteenth century up to the present age, and by enrolling a large number of PhD students and through numerous doctoral procedures and degrees proved its worthy rank among the Hungarian doctoral programs. In the last years further specialization took place: the Contemporary and Comperative History program under the leadership of Professor Béla Tomka separated from the Modern Age program. The boundary of the two programs is 1914, when World War I broke out, but in case of topics concerning 20th century Mediterranean, Near East and the „developing countries” and the Balkan, there is cooperation berween the two programs. In the Modern Age program the 16-18. century research became more relevant, particularly those topics connected with the Ottoman Empire and the middle and southern parts of Hungary under Ottoman rule („Hódoltság”). The program has serious international relations, we cooperate with Austrian, German, French, Slovakian, Roumanian, English and Turkish research and educational institutes. We have ever been striving to provide foreign graduates with the opportunity to obtain PhD degree. However, up till 2016 it was possible just in exceptional cases. From 2016 onwards, due to the Stipendium Hungaricum program of the Hungarian state, Southestern, Asian and African students can earn scholarships to our doctoral training. The past short period suggests, that our program is attractive to many foreign students.

The present of the program

The Modern Age program is organized around several major topics according to chronological aspects and thematic units:

  • the age of the Ottoman and Habsburg Empires in Central Europe in the 16-17. centuries
  • the history of the 18th and 19th century in the Habsburg Monarchy
  • the history of the Mediterranean with the relating Hispanic world, and the past of the Balkan and the historical relations of the USA connected to these regions
  • besides these topics the history of the Eastern Slavs,
  • the history of the Crimean Khaganate.

Hungarian historiography begins the modern era with the fall of the sovereign Hungarian Kingdom with the battle of Mohács (August 29, 1526). By capturing Buda, the capital of Hungary (August 29, 1541) the central parts came under direct Ottoman rule, and the eastern parts (Transylvania) became an Ottoman vassal Christian state, while the northern and eastern territories came under the rule of the Habsburg-dynasty as Hungarian Kingdom. The Hungarian Kingdom ruled by the Habsburgs preserved much of its medieval state administration, church and secular structure, and elective monarchical system (till 1686). The Ottoman vassal Transylvanian Principality was also the guardian of the Hungarian statehood in spite of the Ottoman rule (up till 1687/1699). Until the early 20th century these factors determined the frames of the Hungarian history. The early modern age is clearly present in the doctoral training, one can just refer to the topics of 16-18. century Hungarian statehood, the anti-Ottoman wars, the revolts against the Habsburg rulers, and the Transylvanian Principality.

Liberation from the Turks meant, that all Hungary came under the jurisdiction of the Habsburg-dynasty, but a certain level of state independence remained. The reorganization of Hungarian society took place through anomalies. Hungary regained its territorial unit in only partial detail; in newly reoccupied areas (e. g. in the Banat) military administration and treasury economic management were implemented. From the period under investigation onwards the nationality issue became of major importance, which connected the history of the Hungarians with that of the Serbian, Croatian and Slovak communities living in the surrounding area.

The history of the urbanization is in close connection with the German and Jewish citizens, and with the agricultural and industrial development. The research of the civil revolution of 1848 and war of indepence is determinative, as well as that of the retaliation after the fall, and the police observations.

The following topics appear as well in the program: the internal relations of the last century, the dissolution of the colonial system, the new nation-states formed in the Mediterrenean. The civilization effects of the determining states in the area, Spain and France are far beyond their European frontiers. Both world-class level centres have an important role in our doctoral training. A lot of doctoral theses have been written so far from the history of states of South America, and in the future it will be possible to prepare dissertation from these topics as well. However, besides Spanish-speaking area, the past of the Anglo-Saxon world and the history of the USA is represented, too. In the research of the Mediterranean the French–Hungarian, the Arabic–Hungarian connections, and the history of the Arabic countries get a lot of emphasis, furthermore the colonization and decolonization processes, too.

Because of geopolitical aspects the history of the eastern Slavs (Poland, Russia) and Ukraine plays a key role in our program. For students, who want to do the research in the history of the Crimean Khaganate and the Turkish-speaking people of the steppe, outstanding tutors are available.
