I graduated at Lóránd Eötvös University, Budapest in Classics, Philosophy and English Language and Literature. I defended my doctoral thesis (summa cum laude) at the same University in 2002 in Philosophy (Xenophanes’ Theology and the Beginnigns of Greek Moral Philosophical Thought).

I have been a member of the Department of Philosophy, University of Szeged since 1995, where I teach courses on Ancient Greek Philosophy and Ethics. I have been the Secretary of the Doctoral School of Philosophy since its foundation in 2007, and am currently its Deputy as well. I have organized various national and international conferences and workshops at my University and abroad.

Research profile

My major fields of research include Presocratic philosophy (esp. the Milesians, Heraclitus, Xenophanes, Parmenides), Plato’s ethics and political thought, the historical Socrates, and ethical, moral psychological and theological issues in Ancient Greek culture in general (including the Sophists and Archaic and Classical literature). In terms of modern thought, my interests include the reception of Greek tragedy and Socrates in Hegel, Kierkegaard and Nietzsche; Eric Voegelin’s work on the Greeks; the philosophy of mysticism.

I have been granted various prestigous fellowships in the United States (Center for Hellenic Studies, National Humanities Center) and in Hungary (Bolyai Fellowship, Institute for Advanced Study, CEU); I am an inaugural member of the International Association for Presocratic Studies and the Symposium Presocraticum, where I have been a regularly invited speaker at various international conferences (e.g., Lille, Pisa, Provo, Edinburgh, Mérida, Thessaloniki, Delphi).

I am a Board member of the Hungarian Philosophical Society and the Vice President of the Committee on Philosophy of the 2nd Scientific Section of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. I am a member of the editorial board of Különbség and the editor in chief of SZTElozófia.
