The history of the University of Szeged dates back to 1581, when István Báthory, Prince of Transylvania, King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania, founded the Jesuit College of Cluj. After the First World War, the University of Cluj moved to Szeged in 1921 under the name of Ferenc József University. The university is a special feature of Hungarian higher education. The great researcher Albert Szent-Györgyi, who won the Nobel Prize in 1937, worked here.

With more than 200 qualified lecturers with academic degrees, nearly 3,000 enrolled students and a wide range of educational offerings, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is one of the largest, most successful and internationally outstanding educational institutions in Hungary. This is evidenced, among other things, by the fact that according to the Times Higher Education 2022 report, SZTE has been included in the category of humanities and social sciences, where it is ranked 501-600th worldwide.

The university and the Mediterranean city are inseparable. Around the Faculty and the Study and Information Centre, an almost "Quartier Latin" has grown out of the ground, which contributes greatly to creating a true university atmosphere alongside the learning. The city and the university live and breathe together, as a series of events and festivals demonstrate.

The faculty offers students a wide range of opportunities to acquire knowledge in many disciplines, from history to languages, psychology to literature, and the list goes on. However, the learning and cultural opportunities are not only open to those coming from secondary education. For those who are about to enrol, or who have already graduated or are looking to retire, the Aud. Max, can enrol in the courses and attend courses with full-time students, without the need to take exams, on a wide range of subjects: philosophy, literature, ethnography, art history, etc.

The Faculty is proud of its historical tradition. Its students have included Attila József, Miklós Radnóti and the legendary director István Paál, and its professors are leading figures in the academic world. Tradition is strong, the present is challenging. The faculty's management, its teaching staff, its researchers and all its citizens do their utmost to live up to this tradition, which is both a source of strength and a duty.
